Milk thistle herb (Silybum marianum) is native to Europe and some parts of the USA. It has powerful liver-protecting properties. It prevents damage and improves function.
Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is a well known garden weed. It is much valued as a herbal remedy. It is a rich source of vitamins and minerals, including potassium. Its root is used to improve digestion as it stimulates the flow of digestive juices, including bile from the liver and gallbladder. Dandelion is useful for improving liver function, arthritis and skin conditions. It is also a stimulant to the kidneys, a bitter tonic in dyspepsia and a mild laxative in habitual constipation.
Cleavers (Galium aparine) are found widespread throughout Europe and North America. It has cleansing and diuretic actions and is commonly used for swollen lymph glands and as a general detoxifying agent during illnesses. Cleavers are also used for kidney stones and other urinary problems.
Artichoke is the immature flower of thistle plants. It contains high levels of magnesium, dietary fibre and chromium and is a good source of B group vitamins, Vitamin C and folate. The leaves of the artichoke contain active ingredients called caffeoylquinic acids. Artichokes exert choleretic effects which are said to promote the flow of bile and fat to and from the liver. Traditionally, artichokes have been used for liver disease and digestive problems.
Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) is a tonic, adoptogenic and also acts to protect the liver. The berries contain, triterpenes, volatile oils, Vitamin C and E lignans, which have been found to have anti-hepatoxic actions. Schisandra is also used to tone the kidneys and strengthen nervous function.
Cinnamon bark (Cinnamomum aromaticum) is a stimulant and it has carminative, astringent and antiseptic properties. It is useful for stopping vomiting, relieving flatulence, diarrhoea and haemorrhage.
Suggested Use: Infuse 1-2 teabags in very hot water (not boiling) for 2-10 minutes before drinking to fully capture the flavour and herbal benefits. Use up to three times daily. Add honey to sweeten if desired. Best without milk.
