I have long been a fan of bentonite clay. For thousands of years indigenous peoples from around the world have used nature to enhance health and heal themselves using various herbs, leaves, fruit, grasses, animals and even the earth itself. Much of this has documented over time, and in our modern scientific era many of these ‘secrets’ have been rediscovered. In 1887 in Montmorillon, France, a healing clay named "Montmorillonite" was discovered. It has been widely used in medicine and pharmacology to remove toxins and restore health to people. Montmorillonite is known by many different names around the world, but essentially is bentonite clay. I have found a pure New Zealand South Island mineral calcium bentonite clay which I regard as one of the best example of bentonite to be found. This pure product has been crushed, dried and finely powdered and can be used as a healing and bowel cleansing clay as well as a great mineral boost to your body. We are offering this fantastic product on our website, and please read this page to get a better understanding of the remarkeable healing powers on calcium bentonite clay.
Calcium Bentonite Is Nature's Own Toxic Relief Booster
We live in a truly toxic age in the 21st century. Alarming levels of hazardous chemicals and substances like pesticides, heavy metals and many other toxins including pharmaceutical drugs have been detected in our air, drinking water, food and soil which has increased the need to take extra preventative measures against developing chronic ill health. Some of the more prominent examples in the news include
pharma drugs found in the water supply of most major cites. It is incredible to believe that the water we drink has been found to contain a number of pharmaceuticals including cholesterol drugs, allergy drugs, blood pressure drugs, oral contraceptives and antidepressant drugs. We also eat many conventionally grown foods containing pesticides, herbicides, weedicides and several other chemicals including antifungals, mould inhibitors, growth enhancers and many other man made chemicals. The air we breathe contains many fine particles and chemicals and as you can see it is impossible for humans in the 21st century to completely avoid all exposure to toxins from the air, food and water we consume. Please read our page on
detoxification for more detailed information on how to successfully detoxify your body.
Our Children Are Becoming Increasingly Toxic
Having four children myself, I have a big interest in children's health and see many children in my busy naturopathic clinic. I have noticed a major increase over the past decade of children being diagnosed with behavioural and cognitive problems as well as cancers and various other kinds of immune dysfunction. An environmental working group in America recently reported that children are showing high levels of fire retardant chemicals in their blood known as polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEs. These chemicals are widely used in computers, remote controls, televisions, gaming boxes connected to televisions, mobile phones and similar devices, mattresses and other products. The chemicals cause brain damage in animals and scientists believe that they may be even be responsible for the increase hyperactivity we have seen in children the past decade as plastics and all the new technology is overtaking our lives. Children respond very well to bentonite clay, so this is a good option if you wish to detoxify your child in a highly effective yet mild manner.
Why Clay For Detoxification?
Bentonite clay is a powerful detoxifier, as it "grabs" toxins in the bowel and pulls them out. When bentonite clay absorbs water and swells up, it is stretched open like a highly porous sponge. In fact, according to the Canadian Journal of Microbiology, bentonite clay can absorb pathogenic viruses, as well as herbicides and even pesticides.Toxins are drawn into these spaces through electrical attraction and are bound to it. Due to its highly charged microscopic crystal formation, some experts believe that it contains an electromagnetic energy capable of improving cell repair time. Bentonite clay is completely safe when taken internally because it is not absorbed by the body. Clay has been gaining popularity in many countries around the world because of its ability to bind to, absorb and then rid the body of many different kinds of toxins.
Bentonite clay is a totally unique and complex mineral based substance which cannot be duplicated in any laboratory, it is composed of highly charged miniscule crystals which are formed and ultra-purified through the extreme thermodynamic heat of volcanoes, and it is these highly charged and very pure particles found in clay is what gives it the ability to attach to various toxins and carry them out of the body. The use of clay as a detoxifier is not a recently discovered "fad" by any means, healing clays have been used for many thousands of years. Bentonite clay can also be used with much benefit externally in the bath tub twice a week. Bentonite clay detoxifies the body by drawing toxins through the pores. Healing clay baths should last for approximately twenty minutes.
Taking bentonite clay is part of my regular colon cleansing regimen, and I use it alongside
Dr. Vogel's Detox Programme annually myself. By cleansing the intestinal tract with bentonite clay, you will benefit from greater assimilation because of the bentonite clay's action as an intestinal cleanser and gastrointestinal regulator. As your body "cleans house", it is in a better position to more efficiently assimilate the nutrients it needs, whether those nutrients come from your healing diet, vegetable juicing or any dietary supplements.
Calcium Bentonite Is A Healing Clay
It seems hard to believe that a simple clay soil can help with so many things but it really can; in a remarkably short amount of time and with great ease it can bring about swift results. It is important to know that there are many different clays. The smectite family of clays is particularly known for its healing properties, and calcium bentonite is a smectite clay.
From a gentle internal cleansing to healing wounds, to stopping acid reflux and helping with intestinal disorders, to stopping food poisoning, to detoxing various chemicals, poisons and heavy metals, to healing burns and insect bites, to mending broken bones in less time, to relieving strained muscles, to helping skin rashes, acne and gum problems, to aiding children with autism, to expelling internal parasites, to stopping anemia, clay is a natural replacement to most drugs with absolutely no organ damaging negative side effects unlike pharmaceutical drugs.
The typical Australian and New Zealand diet is highly acid and responsible for the development of many chronic "modern" diseases. A healthy body is a body at equilibrium with a pH of just over 7. Detox Clay has a pH of 8.7 and above is highly effective in bringing an acidic body back to a more alkaline state. Consuming calcium bentonite clay before an acidic meal is an effective way to neutralise the acids in the meal and bring a sense of balance back to the body, and once the body achieves this balance it is able to heal itself.
Primitive Tribes Have Long Used Clay For Health And Healing

Primitive tribes have traditionally used various types of clay for conditions of health and healing as well as toxicity. The famous nutritional expert, Dr. Weston A. Price, mentions in his book, "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration that among the tribes he examined in the high Andes, in Central Africa and the Aborigines of Australia, the knapsacks of primitive peoples often contained balls of volcanic ash clay, a little of which was dissolved in water and used on their skin as well as consumed regularly. Pieces of food were dipped into the clay and consumed for healing and cleansing purposes. Indigenous peoples knew what worked and what didn't as far as nature is concerned, today we know that bentonite clay is possibly the richest natural source of minerals like magnesium, calcium and potassium that you can get. And that's one reason I like it, it is nature's mineral supplement in its purest and most raw form. Even animals living in the wild have instinctively consumed clay when they were in need of healing and african tribes have long used clay as a means of healing.
There are different classifications of clay which exhibit different chemical properties. All clays are beneficial for health but some are more effective than others. Some can be used externally, some internally and some both internally and externally. Certain types of clay have shown to tremendous health benefits due to their highly alkaline or basic pH. Detox Clay is perfect for internal healing and cleansing.
Bentonite Clay As A Mineral Supplement
When I researched bentonite clay, I was amazed to discover that NASA in fact gives calcium bentonite to its astronauts to counteract the effects of osteoporosis caused by weightlessness in space. After much research, NASA found calcium supplements to be ineffective, but bentonite clay worked!
It is important to choose a high quality bentonite clay product. Calcium bentonite should be free of contaminants with a minimum pH of 8.7. Look for natural unprocessed clays for maximum potency. Most pure clays such as calcium bentonite found in Detox Clay have a high alkaline pH. Clay is homeostatic and as such is an adaptogen that brings balance and equilibrium to the body. A balanced body can heal itself. That is what the body is designed to do when it isn't in overload and unable to filter out the build up of toxins and wastes in the body that begin causing health problems.
